Middlesbrough romped to a 8-1 last-day victory over Manchester City at The Riverside. City's hopes of getting something from the game suffered a huge blow after 15 minutes when Richard Dunne was sent-off and gave away a penalty which Stewart Downing dispatched. Boro were comfortable thereafter and extended their lead just before the break when Afonso Alves fired home. In the second-half the home side ran the visitors ragged with Downing and Alves both adding another each. Adam Johnson's deflected effort made it five, but the best was yet to come as Fabio Rochemback unleashed a truly spectacular free-kick from all over 35-yards into the top corner. The seventh came when from Jeremie Aliadiere and the City did grab a late goal through Elano with a nice finish - but Boro were still not finished and it was Alves who slotted him the eighth for his hat-trick, which caped a truly memorable game for Gareth Southgate's men. Should this game be Sven Goran Eriksson's last then he could not have signed off with a worse possible display.
