Sourav Ganguly led from the front during the Kolkata Knight Riders' 23-run victory over the Deccan Chargers on Sunday. The Knight Riders skipper contributed 91 from 57 balls in a total of 204-4, fully justifying his decision to bat first. Ganguly cracked 11 fours and five sixes and was ably supported by David Hussey (57no) during a third-wicket stand of 102 in exactly eight overs. Seam bowler Ashok Dinda (3-33) then removed opening pair Herschelle Gibbs (5) and Adam Gilchrist (24) within the first five overs of the Chargers' reply. And Ganguly was soon back in the action, claiming 2-25 from four overs of medium pace as well as two catches to cap a fine all-round display. Venugopal Rao played a lone hand for the Chargers with an explosive 71 not out from 42 balls, featuring four fours and six sixes. Despite Rao's fine innings, the hosts finished well short on 181-7 from their 20 overs. The result sees Kolkata remain in fifth spot in the Indian Premier League standings with eight points, while Deccan are struggling down in seventh with just two victories from nine matches.
